Associate Planner

Location: Covington, Kentucky

Reports To: Director of Planning
Salary Range: $50,000 – $66,000 annually

The Planning Department plays a vital role in shaping the future of Kenton County communities through comprehensive planning, zoning, long-range studies, and day-to-day development review.


Position Overview

The Associate Planner is a key member of the Planning team. This position performs routine to moderately complex planning duties related to land use regulations, plan review, design review, and community planning. The Associate Planner works closely with the rest of the planning staff, under the supervision of the Director of Planning.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with updates and maintenance of the Comprehensive Plan and development regulations

  • Review and analyze development applications (map amendments, text amendments, site plans, conditional use permits, variances, etc.)

  • Prepare and present reports to the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, and other government bodies

  • Assist with the development of long-range community plans

  • Draft ordinances and regulations related to development controls

  • Serve as liaison between community groups, developers, elected officials, and government agencies

  • Provide information and assistance to the public regarding development regulations

  • Conduct field evaluations and site assessments

  • Attend evening and occasional weekend meetings

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Urban Planning or a related field

  • High school diploma with at least five (5) years of applicable job experience will also be considered


Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to read and interpret development plans and technical documents

  • Strong written, oral, and visual communication skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ArcMap

  • Familiarity with Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign a plus

  • Strong group facilitation and collaboration skills

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to residents, developers, and public officials

  • Ability to maintain organized and well-documented work


Special Requirements

  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and provide own transportation to job sites

  • May be required to pass a background check and drug screening

  • Must obtain AICP certification within two years of becoming eligible to sit for the exam


Working Conditions

  • Office-based work with occasional site visits

  • Independent and team-based work environment

  • Availability required for evening and weekend meetings several times per month
