Position Overview

The Associate Zoning Official is an entry-level position within the Zoning Administration & Code Enforcement department. Working under the direction of the Codes Administrator, this role assists with administering zoning regulations, reviewing development plans, issuing permits, and responding to zoning inquiries. The position provides an excellent opportunity for an individual seeking to develop a career in planning, zoning, or code administration while serving the public and contributing to the growth of our community.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review site plans, zoning applications, and permit requests for compliance with local regulations.

  • Administer zoning regulations and assist with drafting and recommending amendments to zoning ordinances and development regulations.

  • Maintain accurate records for zoning permits, inquiries, and amendments.

  • Respond to questions and complaints from the public, contractors, and developers regarding zoning and development requirements.

  • Coordinate with local jurisdictions, planning staff, and other agencies on zoning and land use matters.

  • Provide clear and professional communication—both written and verbal—with residents, business owners, and public officials.

  • Utilize software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and GIS mapping tools.

  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned to support departmental goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, public administration, construction, or related field preferred.

  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to read and interpret legal and technical documents.

  • Working knowledge of zoning, land use, and general planning principles.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based systems; GIS knowledge preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license required.


Working Conditions

  • Standard office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required.

  • This position requires some standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

  • Mileage reimbursement is provided for work-related travel.
